Yankee Dumplings: A Family Tradition from Western PA and Southern NY
Ingredients:
- 2 cups Flour
- 1 tablespoon Baking Powder
- 1 teaspoon Salt
- 1 cup Milk
- 4 tablespoons Melted Butter
Instructions:
- Mixing the Dough:
- In a bowl, combine 2 cups of flour, 1 tablespoon of baking powder, and 1 teaspoon of salt.
- Add 1 cup of milk and 4 tablespoons of melted butter to the dry ingredients.
- Mix the ingredients just until well combined. Be careful not to overmix.
- Creating the Dumplings:
- Drop spoonfuls of the dough into simmering stew. The size of the spoonfuls can vary based on your preference; larger spoonfuls create bigger dumplings.
- Cover the stew and let it simmer for 15 minutes without disturbing or uncovering.
- Cooking to Perfection:
- During the 15 minutes of cooking, the dumplings will expand in size, and the surface may develop "cracks." This is a sign that they are done.
- Resist the urge to disturb or uncover the dumplings before the 15-minute mark.
- Customizing Your Dumplings:
- Feel free to add extra flavors to the dry ingredients, such as garlic powder, sage, or other seasonings that complement your stew.
- Serve and Enjoy:
- Once cooked, serve the stew with these soft and delicious Yankee Dumplings on top.
