Yankee Dumplings

Yankee Dumplings: A Family Tradition from Western PA and Southern NY

  • 2 cups Flour
  • 1 tablespoon Baking Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 4 tablespoons Melted Butter

Yankee Dumplings:

  1. Mixing the Dough:
    • In a bowl, combine 2 cups of flour, 1 tablespoon of baking powder, and 1 teaspoon of salt.
    • Add 1 cup of milk and 4 tablespoons of melted butter to the dry ingredients.
    • Mix the ingredients just until well combined. Be careful not to overmix.
  2. Creating the Dumplings:
    • Drop spoonfuls of the dough into simmering stew. The size of the spoonfuls can vary based on your preference; larger spoonfuls create bigger dumplings.
    • Cover the stew and let it simmer for 15 minutes without disturbing or uncovering.
  3. Cooking to Perfection:
    • During the 15 minutes of cooking, the dumplings will expand in size, and the surface may develop "cracks." This is a sign that they are done.
    • Resist the urge to disturb or uncover the dumplings before the 15-minute mark.
  4. Customizing Your Dumplings:
    • Feel free to add extra flavors to the dry ingredients, such as garlic powder, sage, or other seasonings that complement your stew.
  5. Serve and Enjoy:
    • Once cooked, serve the stew with these soft and delicious Yankee Dumplings on top.
