Ingredients
- 1 (10 ½ oz) can Campbell’s French onion soup, divided
- 1 ½ lbs ground beef (80/20 for the best flavor and texture)
- ½ cup dry breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- ¼ tsp salt
- ⅛ tsp black pepper, to taste
- 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp butter
- 2 cups beef broth (low sodium if desired)
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
Equipment Needed
- Large mixing bowl
- Large skillet with lid
- Whisk
- Spatula or tongs
- Measuring cups and spoons
Instructions
1. Mix the Patties
In a large bowl, gently combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, salt, pepper, and ¼ cup of the French onion soup. Mix with your hands until just combined. Do not overmix.
2. Shape
Form into 4–6 oval patties, each about ¾ inch thick.
3. Brown the Meat
In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium-high heat. Add the patties and brown on both sides until a golden crust forms. Transfer patties to a plate and set aside.
4. Make the Gravy
Reduce heat to medium. Sprinkle flour into the skillet and whisk for 1 minute to cook out the raw taste.
5. Build the Sauce
Slowly whisk in the remaining French onion soup and the beef broth, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce and bring to a simmer.
6. Simmer with Patties
Return the browned patties to the skillet. Cover and simmer for 15–20 minutes, flipping once halfway through, until the gravy thickens and the patties are fully cooked.
7. Serve and Enjoy
Serve hot with plenty of gravy over mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or buttery rice. Garnish with parsley if desired.
Tips & Variations
- Use ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
- Add sautéed mushrooms to the gravy for extra depth.
- Freeze extra patties (uncooked) for a quick future meal.
- Great for meal prep—just reheat gently in the gravy.
