- Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a 9x13-inch pan with foil and spray lightly.
- Mix cake mix, eggs, oil, and water until just combined (batter will be thick). Spread evenly in the pan.
- Bake 18–20 minutes until the center is barely set with a slight jiggle. Do not overbake. Cool completely.
- Whisk powdered sugar and cocoa. Add melted butter, 3 tablespoons milk, and vanilla; stir until smooth and spreadable (add more milk only if needed).
- Spread frosting over cooled brownies in thick swirls. Cut into squares and serve.
Notes
Do not overbake—pull when the center still has a slight jiggle. Cool completely before frosting. Batter will seem sparse but spreads to the right thickness. Frosting should be thick and glossy. Line the pan for easy removal. Best the day they are made but still excellent the next day. Store covered. Highly addictive.
