Black Folks Sweet Potato Pie

A creamy, soulful Southern classic made with sweet potatoes, warm spices, and love. Perfect for holidays, Sunday dinners, or anytime you crave a taste of home.

Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups mashed sweet potatoes about 2–3 medium
  • ½ cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup packed light brown sugar
  • ½ cup evaporated milk or whole milk
  • 2 large eggs room temperature
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of ground cloves optional
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 1 9-inch unbaked pie crust

Equipment

  • 9-inch pie dish
  • mixing bowls
  • Electric hand or stand mixer
  • Rubber spatula or wooden spoon
  • whisk
  • Fork or knife for testing doneness
  • Wire rack for cooling

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake sweet potatoes 45–60 mins, peel, and mash.
  2. Cream butter and sugars until fluffy.
  3. Add sweet potatoes, milk, eggs, vanilla, and spices; mix until smooth.
  4. Pour filling into crust and smooth top.
  5. Reduce oven to 350°F (175°C); bake 50–60 mins or until center is set.
  6. Cool 2–3 hours before slicing. Serve with whipped cream if desired.

Notes

Refrigerate covered up to 4 days. Bring to room temp before serving or enjoy cold.
