- In a wide saucepan, combine blackberries, water, sugar, salt, and lemon extract. Bring to a rolling boil over medium-high heat.
- Reduce to a gentle simmer for 5 minutes.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, and nutmeg. Add milk and stir just until combined.
- Drop tablespoon-sized scoops of batter into the simmering fruit. Space evenly.
- Cover tightly and simmer on low for 15 minutes—do not lift the lid.
- Remove from heat. Serve warm with ice cream or whipped cream.
