Ingredients

  • Filling:
  • 6 cups sliced apples about 5–6 apples
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Topping:
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ cup unsalted butter cold and cubed

Equipment

  • 9×9-inch baking dish (or similar)

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Toss apples with lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Place in a greased baking dish.
  2. Mix flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Cut in cold butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Sprinkle topping evenly over apples.
  4. Bake 40–45 minutes until topping is golden and apples are tender. Rest 10–15 minutes before serving.

Notes

Use firm baking apples for best texture. Keep butter cold for a crisp topping. Excellent with vanilla ice cream. Leftovers reheat well. A true fall classic.
