Crispy Fried Green Tomatoes

A classic Southern dish with the perfect crunch and tang.

Ingredients
  

  • 4 green tomatoes
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 cup flour
  • ½ cup cornmeal
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp pepper
  • Oil for frying

Equipment

  • Large heavy skillet
  • Shallow bowls or plates
  • Tongs
  • Wire rack and paper towels
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Method
 

  1. Slice and pat dry tomatoes.
  2. Whisk eggs and milk. Mix flour, cornmeal, salt, pepper.
  3. Heat oil to 350°F.
  4. Dip tomatoes in egg wash, coat in flour mixture.
  5. Fry 2–3 mins per side. Drain on rack.
  6. Serve with dipping sauce.

Notes

Try adding spices to the flour mix.
Great on burgers or with a drizzle of hot honey.
