Ingredients

  • 4 medium apples peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • ¼ cup melted butter slightly cooled
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoons sugar mixed with ½ teaspoon cinnamon topping

Equipment

  • 9x9-inch baking dish, mixing bowl, whisk

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter a 9x9 baking dish.
  2. Arrange apple slices evenly in the dish.
  3. Whisk eggs and sugar until smooth. Add flour, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Stir in milk, melted butter, and vanilla until silky.
  5. Pour batter over apples. Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar.
  6. Bake 45–50 minutes until deeply golden and edges pull from the pan.
  7. Cool at least 15 minutes before slicing.

Notes

Slice apples thinly. Do not overmix. Generous cinnamon-sugar topping creates the crackly crust. Excellent warm or at room temperature. Almond milk works as a substitute.
