Ingredients

  • 1 loaf French bread
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 medium onion diced
  • 1 green bell pepper diced
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • cups shredded mozzarella
  • ½ cup shredded provolone
  • 3 tablespoons butter melted
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional red pepper flakes

Equipment

  • Large skillet, baking sheet, foil

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Brown ground beef; season with salt and pepper.
  2. Add onion and bell pepper; cook until softened. Stir in garlic. Cool slightly.
  3. Slice French bread lengthwise (not all the way through). Hollow out some interior.
  4. Brush inside with garlic butter. Fill with beef mixture and top with cheeses.
  5. Wrap loosely in foil and bake 15 minutes. Unwrap and bake 5–7 minutes more until cheese is bubbly and edges are golden.
  6. Rest a few minutes, slice, and serve.

Notes

Leave the bottom of the bread intact so it holds the filling. Let the beef cool slightly before stuffing. Foil then uncovered baking gives the best texture. Excellent for game day or easy weeknight dinners. Leftovers reheat well in foil.
