Grandma’s Traditional Apple Strudel

A classic homemade apple strudel with ultra-thin pastry and a fragrant apple filling—an heirloom dessert full of warmth and tradition.

Ingredients
  

Dough:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • ¾ cup lukewarm water
Filling:
  • 6 apples sliced
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ½ cup raisins optional
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg
  • Juice of ½ lemon
  • ½ cup buttered breadcrumbs
  • ¼ cup walnuts optional
Finish:
  • 3 tbsp melted butter
  • Powdered sugar

Equipment

  • mixing bowl
  • Rolling Pin
  • Tablecloth or towel
  • Baking sheet
  • pastry brush

Method
 

  1. Mix and knead dough; rest 30 minutes.
  2. Toss apples with sugar, spice, and lemon.
  3. Stretch dough paper-thin.
  4. Butter dough; sprinkle breadcrumbs; add filling.
  5. Roll, butter, and bake at 375°F for 35–40 minutes.
  6. Dust with sugar and serve warm.

Notes

Dough must rest to stretch properly
Breadcrumbs prevent soggy pastry
Best eaten the day it’s baked
