Hillbilly Pie (Poor Man’s Pie)

A creamy, old-fashioned custard pie made with simple pantry ingredients. Comforting, budget-friendly, and irresistibly nostalgic.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg optional
  • Pinch of salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter melted
  • ¾ cup milk

Equipment

  • 9-inch pie dish
  • mixing bowls
  • whisk
  • measuring cups

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Whisk sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  3. Whisk butter, milk, and vanilla separately.
  4. Combine wet and dry ingredients until smooth.
  5. Pour into unbaked crust.
  6. Bake 45–55 minutes until set.
  7. Cool completely before slicing.

Notes

Pie sets fully as it cools — do not slice hot
Whole milk gives the creamiest result
Excellent served with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream
