Navy S.O.S. (Ground Beef Gravy on Toast)

Originally served to hungry sailors aboard Navy ships, this easy ground beef and gravy over toast recipe is the kind of nostalgic, no-frills meal that satisfies like nothing else

Ingredients
  

  • - 1 lb 80/20 ground beef
  • - ½ medium onion diced
  • - 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • - 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • - 2 cups whole milk
  • - ½ tsp ground nutmeg
  • - Salt and black pepper to taste
  • - Toasted bread or warm biscuits for serving

Equipment

  • Large skillet or sauté pan
  • Mixing spoon or spatula
  • whisk
  • Toaster or oven (for the bread or biscuits)

Method
 

  1. In a skillet, brown the ground beef over medium heat. Drain excess grease.
  2. Add diced onion and cook until soft, about 5–7 minutes.
  3. Sprinkle in flour, stir constantly for 1–2 minutes.
  4. Add butter and stir until melted and combined.
  5. Gradually whisk in milk, stirring until thickened.
  6. Season with nutmeg, salt, and pepper.
  7. Serve hot over toast or biscuits.

Notes

Great for breakfast, brunch, or a late-night meal. Add shredded cheese or hot sauce for extra flavor.
