Ingredients

  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • cups chopped onion
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¾ cup ketchup
  • 2 teaspoons tomato paste
  • ½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • teaspoons brown sugar
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 4 slices Texas toast
  • 1 ounce shredded cheddar cheese

Equipment

  • Large skillet
  • Baking sheet
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Measuring cups & spoons
  • Cheese grater (optional)

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and chopped onion until the beef is browned and the onion is tender. Drain any excess grease.
  3. Stir in the ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5–8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens.
  4. While the filling simmers, place the Texas toast on a baking sheet and bake for 5–6 minutes, or until golden brown and crisp.
  5. Spoon the hot sloppy joe mixture evenly over each slice of toasted Texas toast.
  6. Sprinkle with shredded cheddar cheese. The heat from the beef will melt the cheese perfectly.
  7. Serve immediately while the toast is crisp and the filling is hot.

Notes

Drain the beef well to prevent a greasy filling.
Toast the bread until golden so it stays crisp under the sauce.
Freshly shredded cheddar melts more smoothly than pre-shredded cheese.
The beef mixture can be prepared ahead of time and refrigerated for up to 4 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
Delicious served with fries, coleslaw, pickles, or a simple green salad.
