Ingredients

  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • cups onion chopped
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ¾ cup ketchup
  • 2 tsp tomato paste
  • ½ tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • tsp brown sugar
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 4 pieces Texas toast
  • 1 oz cheddar cheese shredded

Equipment

  • Large skillet, baking sheet, wooden spoon, knife, cutting board

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef and chopped onion until the beef is cooked through and the onion is softened. Drain excess grease.
  3. Stir in garlic powder, ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, salt, and pepper. Cook over medium heat until the mixture thickens, about 5–8 minutes.
  4. Meanwhile, place Texas toast on a baking sheet and bake 5–6 minutes until golden brown.
  5. Spoon the hot Sloppy Joe mixture onto each piece of toast. Top with shredded cheddar.
  6. Serve immediately while the toast is crisp and the cheese is melting.

Notes

Make the filling ahead for even faster assembly. Assemble just before serving to keep the toast from softening. Adjust brown sugar and seasoning to taste.
