Southern-Style Buttermilk Biscuits

Flaky, tender biscuits made with self-rising flour and tangy buttermilk—ready in under 30 minutes!

Ingredients
  

  • - 2 cups self-rising flour
  • - ¼ cup shortening
  • - ¾ cup buttermilk plus extra if needed
  • - Melted butter optional

Equipment

  • Pastry blender or two knives
  • whisk
  • Biscuit cutter or floured glass
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper or silicone mat
  • Pastry brush (for optional butter brushing)

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C) and line a baking sheet.
  2. Combine flour and shortening until coarse crumbs form.
  3. Stir in buttermilk until a sticky dough forms.
  4. Lightly knead on floured surface for 5–10 seconds.
  5. Pat dough to ½–¾″ thick and cut biscuits.
  6. Bake 12–15 minutes until golden.
  7. Brush with melted butter if desired.

Notes

- For extra flakiness, use cold cubed butter instead of shortening.
- Add garlic powder and chives for savory biscuits.
- Substitute half the flour with whole wheat for nuttier flavor.
