Enjoy Delicious Apple Fritters with a Nostalgic Twist
Apple fritters bring back cherished memories from various stages of life—family vacations, summer county fairs, and visits to a quaint country store near our home that sold fresh, homemade apple fritters served in paper bags. My mom would also make these as a delightful treat. Here's a simple recipe to make your own delicious apple fritters at home.
Ingredients
For the Fritters:
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1/3 cup milk
- 2 eggs
- 3 tsp applesauce
- 2 large Honey Crisp or Granny Smith apples (cored, peeled, and cubed)
- Canola oil (for frying)
For the Glaze:
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup milk
- 2/8 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
Prepare the Fritters:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, and applesauce until well blended.
- Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined.
- Gently fold in the cubed apples until evenly distributed.
- Heat canola oil in a deep frying pan or fryer to 375°F (190°C).
- Carefully drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil, frying in batches to avoid overcrowding.
- Fry each fritter until golden brown and cooked through, about 2-3 minutes per side.
- Remove fritters with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
Prepare the Glaze:
- In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- While the fritters are still warm, dip each one into the glaze or drizzle the glaze over the top.
Serve and Enjoy: Place the glazed fritters on a cooling rack set over a baking sheet lined with wax paper to set. Serve warm and enjoy the perfect blend of sweet apples and cinnamon.
